"Sturdy built for all sort of adventures"

BEEQ has delivered an electric bike that manages to not only for urban commuters but whose keen to an adventure in any kind of terrain and weather conditions. The Shimano powered bike mixes the trekking ability of a commuting bike with the ability to cover ground that a gravel bike can provide. While there are some less than perfect areas, the overall package and price make it well worth a look.

Luís and I made this review after testing out BEEQ C500 Trekking eBike in three months of intense use while we did Bike & Sketch Portugal Tour in summer 2021. So, we will not talk technically but the honest review based on our experiences.

How it rides

Durability

After ride 2534 kms in all kind of terrains, from smooth tared road to gravel and rocky road, we never felt the bicycle would break. The build is sturdy for all sort of adventures. We can say that BEEQ C500 Trekking is a solid electric bike. We always felt safe and confident for its stability during the journey.

Engine

Shimano STEPS E5000 is a very quiet engine. What didn’t exceed our expectations was on long 10% or more uphills (more than 1 km), the engine would slowdown to a point that it wouldn’t push anymore. We had to stop, turn off the engine, and wait for a bit before we turn it on again. We believe it could be the overheating and the weight we carried since we traveled in the summer.

Batteries

When we started the tour on June 14th 2021, the battery range on the level 3 (max) were 75 km (after fully charged). As the tour goes on, the batteries are getting less range. And at the end of the trip, September 14th 2021, Luís battery range on the level 3 was only marking 69 km, while Anisa’ battery was 72 km after they fully charged. With a simple math, the battery will be less 1 km every after 1000 km.

Running out of battery power was our main concern during the Bike & Sketch Portugal Tour, since the motor itself makes the pedals heavier.

Tires

BEEQ C500 Trekking

The tires perform beyond our expectation. We had tire from the same brand before but they went bald quickly. With these tires, we rode more than 3000 km in mixed trails but until we wrote this article, they are still in a very good condition.

Transmission

Overall, the transmission is good. For commuting, the rear plates will be more than perfect. Yet, for traveling like we did, it will be better to have a bigger one as sometime we had to climb >20% of inclination. Although BEEQ C500 Trekking is a light eBike, it’s still heavier than a normal bike. The weight become so much more for us to push.

Parts Resistance

The pedals aren’t the most suitable for rainy days because they can be slippery. The handles offer a good grip which help in difficult manoeuvres. We also highlights how light they are and how resilience among the falls that the eBike has suffered. It was always a good surprise to see that they didn’t broke.

We also noted the degradation of the racks being shaved by the panniers and the handlebar adapter changing colour due to the sun. However, they are still intact and we never have problem with them, and that is the most important aspect.

What we love

We never thought we would enjoy traveling with an electric bike so much. The extra energy help us to save our energy to do what we love: sketch, take photos, and more importantly, enjoy the journey more than being exhausted.

What we would change

Lamp

Adjustable light strength or at least a blinking option will be great for the front and rear lamp. Some country like Portugal sometimes has misty weather, especially during the on the coast.

For our touring setup, we had a handlebar bag that covered the front lamp. The easy solution would be extend the cable lamp and set it in on the front rack. Despite that, we were quite satisfied with the light during our rides at night.

Frame

BEEQ C500 Trekking is a solid eBike that is great for bike touring. However, it’s quite big one. I am is 165 cm (5’5″) tall, using medium size, yet, I’m on the limit. If there is a smaller size from the same type, it will be better for a person who as tall or smaller than me.

Saddle

The saddle is could be more comfortable for long ride and consecutive days. The facts that it doesn’t have an opening in the middle makes the seat very hot and uncomfortable after awhile. Ultimately, adding a seat suspension, to take some of the hard bumps we got on the gravel roads, would be a big plus.

BEEQ C500 Trekking is an excellent eBike to do a few days of adventure in any kind of terrain and weather condition. It’s an ideal for whose enjoy traveling and exercise at the same time without being exhausted at the end of the day.

It’s an easier way to accustom into bike touring, since it is very resistant eBike and maintenance free. (during the Bike & Sketch Portugal Tour, we never had problem) Yet, it doesn’t mean that you don’t know how to do some basic repair such us fix a puncture or replace the inner tube.

Finally, it’s the ultimate solution for a couple with different physical rhythm but love to travel together, just like us!
